On Foreplay

August - 04
Q:
Dear Friend in Christ,

I have a question that has been bothering me for some time. My husband and I are faithful Catholics. We have 6 children and are expecting our 7th.

We firmly believe in being open to life with every act of intercourse. We enjoy expressing our love physically with a lot of foreplay but always with normal, vaginal intercourse at the completion. My question is this, is there any sin in all of this foreplay, or is this just a hang-up left over from before we were married?

Sincerely,

Lisa

A:  Dear Lisa,

Foreplay between husband and wife is perfectly normal and part of God's design.

Foreplay becomes disordered and even sinful when the unitive and procreative intent of God in the marriage act is interrupted or impeded, so that the very purpose of lovemaking, the procreation of children within a family, is denied solely for the sake of physical pleasure.

That is, husband and wife, within the context of the marriage act, must always be open to the begetting of children in accordance to God's will for that family.

God Bless!
