Chaplet of Seven Sorrows of Our Lady

This devotion originated in the thirteenth century.  It recalls the Sorrows which the Virgin Mother of God endured in compassion for the suffering and death of her Divine Son.  The seven Sorrows chaplet consists of one Our Father followed by seven Hail Mary's for each of the Seven Sorrows.  At the end, three Hail Mary's are said in honor of the Tears of our Sorrowful Mother.

- The 1st SorrowThe Prophecy of Holy Simeon

The prophecy of Simeon foretold of the bitter passion and death of Jesus, including the piercing of Mary's heart with a sword.

The 2nd SorrowThe Flight into Egypt

This sorrow recalls how the Holy Family is forced to flee into Egypt from the death decree of Herod, and the slaughter of the Innocents.

-  The 3rd SorrowThe Loss of the Child Jesus

Our Sorrowful Mother is separated from Jesus for three long days while He is lost in Jerusalem.

The 4th Sorrow

The Encounter of Jesus and Mary along the way of the Cross

Our Sorrowful Mother meets her son Jesus on the road to Calvary and sees Him fall under the weight of the cruel Cross.

- The 5th SorrowJesus dies on the Cross

Our Sorrowful Mother watches her Son die on the Cross.

- The 6th SorrowMary Receives the Body of Jesus

Our Sorrowful Mother takes the dead body of Her Son in Her arms as He is taken down from the Cross.

- The 7th SorrowThe Burial of Jesus

Our Sorrowful Mother sees Jesus placed in the tomb.

The Chaplet of Unity NEW!

The Chaplet is recited on ordinary rosary beads. Groups may divide the
recitation between Leader (L) and Responders (R). If you are alone
recite both parts. Recite on the large bead before each of five
decades:

L:
God our Heavenly Father, through Your Son Jesus, our Victim-High
Priest, True Prophet, and Sovereign King,

R:  Pour forth the power of Your Holy Spirit upon us and open our
hearts. In Your Great Mercy, through the Motherly Mediation of the
Blessed Virgin Mary, our Queen, forgive our sinfulness, heal our
brokenness, and renew our hearts in the faith, and peace, and love,
and joy of Your Kingdom, that we may be one in You.

Recite on the ten small beads of each of the five decades:

L:
In Your Great Mercy,

R:  Forgive our sinfulness, heal our brokenness, and renew our hearts
that we may be one in You.

Conclude in unison:

Hear, O Israel! The Lord Our God is One God!

Oh Jesus, King of All Nations, may Your reign be recognized on Earth!

Mary, Our Mother and Mediatrix of All Grace, pray and intercede for us
your children!

Saint Michael, great prince and guardian of your people, come with the
holy angels and saints and protect us!
